ThinGs on SWmud you don't need to 'typo'

On SWMud, there is a select group of words that glares at the typo seeker and just dares the player to report them. However, for a variety of reasons, these selections are not typos. They cannot or will not be changed. "By the Great Slug Set Himself, how will I know what I shouldn't typo?" you might be thinking. Well, that's what this panic file is for!

The Most Commonly Reported Non-Typos on SWMud:

  1. Feelings with multiple verbs
  2. Incorrect pluralization of multiple items
  3. Spelling and grammatical errors in gibbets
  4. Dock smugglers who sidle
  5. The Taylor on Bespin
  6. The writ of Habeus Corpses on Corellia
  7. Other intentional misspellings
  8. Various references to Zero Wing
  9. Variations in spelling
  10. Mobs who appear to teach the wrong skills
  11. Mobs whose names are not fully capitalized
  12. "Press whip button?"
  13. Creative suggestions

"But but but... why?!" you wonder? Here are the reasons:

1. Feelings with multiple verbs

This is due to a limitation in the code for feelings. For any feeling which contains TWO (2) VERBS, the first verb should always be conjugated correctly to you and to the room. However, the second verb CANNOT be set to conjugate correctly to both you AND aloud to the room you are in. In order for the most people to see the sentence correctly, all feelings of this nature are set so that the ROOM will see it correctly, but you will NOT see it correctly. This is a feature, NOT a bug.

This is NOT to say that no feelings have typos in them. There may be some which do have typos. However, before you post a feeling to the typo rn (the news system), please double check that the 'typo' is not the second verb's conjugation in a 2-verb feeling.

Some of the feelings that have two verbs and will not be changed include: bak, bbl, brb, hbow, kitten, pgroove, and woo.

2. Incorrect pluralization of multiple items

This is also caused by limitations in the mud's code. The mud automatically attempts to pluralize items that are already plural in their short description (a pair of gloves, for example, becomes two pairs of gloveses). Also, items that end with 's' or have irregular conjugations do not conjugate properly.

Unfortunately, nothing can be done about this, so you'll just have to live with it.

3. Spelling and grammatical errors in gibbets

When a Law wizard punishes a player, he or she writes up the text that appears on the gibbet in the start room. Due to limitations in the gibbet code, once a gibbet is written, it cannot be changed. Since the gibbet only remains in the start room until the next reboot, it is not a high priority to correct any grammatical or spelling errors.

4. Dock smugglers who sidle

On almost every planet, there is at least one dock smuggler who provides quick, direct transportation to the selected planet of your choice. Upon entering a room with one of these smugglers in it, the player sees "A [smuggler's race] sidles up to you and attracts your attention...." Sidle is in fact a word. This is NOT meant to read 'slides.' Please read panic sidle for more information.

5. The Taylor on Bespin

In the Holiday Towers on Bespin, there is a mon called 'The Taylor.' The coder of said mon is attempting a play on words: the mon's name is Taylor and his occupation is a tailor. Although the extra 'the' is unnecessary, it makes the coder happy and so it will not be changed. :)

6. The Writ of Habeus Corpses on Corellia

In the offices of Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe, there are rotating mons of the three attorneys, some of whom carry a Writ of Habeus Corpses. This is another play on words. In the United States, there is a legal document called the Writ of Habeus Corpus. Again, this was done intentionally and will not be changed.

7. Other Intentional Misspellings

There are other instances of oddly spelled words on the mud, such as the feeling 'whale'. This is intentionally done, as mudders' in-jokes have made it into the mainstream culture of the mud. While there's no real way of knowing if a typo is intentional just by looking at it, these sorts of exceptions will usually be listed here.

8. Various references to Zero Wing

When a bomb is timerset or the stomtrooper helmet chatter takes a grammatical nosedive, Zero Wing is behind it all! Panic zero_wing for better understanding (though full understanding is still doubtful).

9. Variations in spelling

Some words in the English language are spelled in multiple ways, for example, color and colour (both of which have panic files). As long as a word is spelled properly, it doesn't matter whether it's "armor" or "armour" - it will not be changed.

10. Mobs who appear to teach the wrong skills

Some mobs got their teaching credentials in the Dark Ages and haven't quite gotten with the times yet. They existed on the mud before the guild changes began and not all of the mobs that teach specific skills have yet been updated. Since the guild changes have not yet been completed, it's silly to fix them before that time, since it doesn't affect gameplay (you will learn the proper skills for your level no matter what). Rest assured that someday, this will be remedied.

11. Mobs whose names are not fully capitalized

Due to "strange things" happening when a mob's set_name is capitalized, mobs with names longer than one word always only have their first letter capitalized (ie. Boba fett). This occurrence is technically not a typo. However, you could still notify the planet's caretaker so that s/he can change the mob's name to a single word, if s/he desires.

12. "Press whip button?"

If you are holding a monofilament whip and make a typo when attempting to press a different button in a room, you will receive the failure message "Press whip button?" This is NOT meant to be "Press which button?" The monofilament whip's failure message overrides the room failure message.

13. Creative suggestions

If you see something in an area that appears wrong to you, but it is spelled correctly, is not buggy, and does not otherwise impede gameplay in the area, then it is NOT a typo or a bug. Please either post your suggestion in rn idea or, if applicable, mudmail the area's caretaker.
